Due to the rapid growth in the population of Charleston, South Carolina, in 1751 by Acts of Assembly St. Philip's Parish was divided to form St. Michael's Parish. St. Michael's Episcopal Church is the oldest church edifice in Charleston, South Carolina. Authorized in 1751, the cornerstone was laid in 1752. The structure was completed in 1761.
